Kids TV - SpongeBob SquarePants

SpongeBob squarepants, is a household name today, with most kids glued to the TV when this cartoon is aired in primetime. Ask kids what they like about this cartoon show, and most do not have an answer, yet there they are eyes popping out, legs sprawled out with tubs of popcorn or snacks in their hands, every time this cartoon is aired.
Fondly known as SpongeBob, this cartoon series is the master mind of a marine biologist turned animator Stephen Hillenburg. Nickelodean’s all time hit, this cartoon series features sponge bob and his friends in their many trysts and adventures in their underwater fictional city by name ‘Bikini Bottom’!!! Note the similarity between the main character’s name and the city he lives in. As interesting and queer as the name seems, the many adventures of sponge bob are equally interesting and enthralling, and often are fun enough to hook full grown adults! Now if that sounds unconvincing to those of you have not seen an episode of this series, you will be surprised to know that the series found its way twelfth on the list of ‘THE TOP 25 ANIMATED SERIES FOR ADULTS!’ announced by IGN.

This is the highest rated show on Nickelodean , and the most distributed property of the famed MTV networks. The media franchise is said to have generated a whopping $8 billion merchandising revenue for Nickelodean! Can you beat that!
This famous cartoon show has it’s own history, and taken several years to be conceived and brought to the air. Hillenberg is said to have thought of this idea way back in 1984, and only began working on it post the cancellation of his other show Rocko’s Modern Way is 1986. Tom Kenny who worked in the Modern way was approached to lend voice for the cute sponge bob. And the rest is history! Spongeboy was the name first thought of by Hillenberg, and since it was already taken by a mop product, he went creative and came up with SpongeBob square pants- a name on the lips of every kid today. Square pants, was decided as a family name as he felt it had a nice feel and ring to it.

The very first episode was first aired in 1999 in the month of May in the United States of America.  The show was aired soon after the 1999’s Kids’ choice awards and was instantly liked by viewers. Upon release this series is said to have received worldwide critical acclaim, though it also had it’s shares of public controversies.  The show however took until mid 2000, to become more popular, and since then has only soared in rankings!
SpongeBob also has a feature film to his name which was released in theatres on Nov 19-2004, and was a blockbuster. A sequel to the feature film is charted to release on Jul 21- 2015 and is much awaited by kids across the globe. This series has been nominated for 11 Emmy awards, and 20 Annie awards, and won one Emmy and 6 Annies!

This series that was originally created for the age group 6 and 11, has become a pop couture phenomenon. Every month more and more kids and adults are said to tune into Nickelodean to watch Sponge bob- the child like main character and the silly situations he and his dim witted friend Patrick get into. Sandy cheeks the squirrel, and Squidward accompany SpongeBob who lives in a pineapple shaped home and works as a fry cook at Krust Krab a famed fast food joint in the deep sea town of Bikini Bottom.

Imaginative story lines and humor are the highlights of this series that is loved by kids the world over.
