Vishweshwariah Museum- Home for the richest scientific treasures

When on a trip to Bangalore there is no way you can miss out on this tourist attraction. Set up in the year 1962, The Vishweshwaraiah Industrial and Technological Museum is run by the Ministry of Culture of the Indian Government.

It is a place that people with a love for industries and technology will totally cherish as it displays a variety of aspects that are related to them. The museum also has a lot of exhibits related to science and technology and boasts of various displays of airplanes and steam engines that were used in the past. It has the proud distinction of being the only other museum apart from the Smithsonian Institution in the US to have an exact replica of the Wright Brothers flyer.

The museum is separated into five different galleries with each addressing a particular aspect of science and technology. Let us try and look into the fun stuff you can experience as you visit these five galleries. Starting with the most visited and enjoyable gallery which is the Children’s Science Hall. This hall contains a variety of exhibits that attracts a lot of children. In fact this museum is one of the most commonly visited places by schools in and around the city. Children in this gallery particular enjoy the giant piano on which they can dance to playing music. Plus there is a pin-wall that helps children identify and pin their body parts. Apart from these there is the virtual gaming center where children can play a variety of games and learn new stuff at the same time.

The next thing to look for is the engine gallery. This hall is known for the application of science in an interesting manner. The hall boasts of exhibits of various automobile engines, a jet aircraft engine and several other machines that are used in industries. The principle of conservation of energy is very neatly explained by the mechanical exhibit which shows rolling balls moving over metal tracks. The balls constantly rotate around the track without any external force amusing several new people. People who love mechanics and are interested in machines should surely give this place a visit. The place serves as an excellent center of learning for budding engineers of the future.

The Electro Technic Gallery as the name suggests shows exhibits that pertain to concepts related to electricity and electronics and communication. Some common principles used by exhibits include Faraday’s ring, Oersted’s experiment etc. These principles are fundamental concepts for electrical engineers and understanding a complex concept like this becomes easier when applied practically like this. Plus there are other devices that will drive electrical engineers crazy such as a Van De Graaff generator and Tesla Coil which are considered marvels in the field of electrostatics.

The smaller galleries are the Fun Science gallery and the Space gallery. The fun science as the name suggests has exhibits that deal with interesting concepts of science such as sound, optics, fluids and math. This is a fun filled segment that has a lot of interactive exhibits for people. The space gallery deals with rocket science and has exhibits that explain the same.

The museum is open to the public from 10 am to 6 pm and is open on all days except Diwali and Ganesh Chaturthi. The entrance fee is only Rs.15 and people visiting this place can either park their cars on Cubbon Road or Richmond Circle and walk towards the museum from there. People coming by bus can simply get off at Cubbon Park and walk to the museum.
